Janette Phillips British

Overview

Art is made to be seen, to be enjoyed, to be talked about over dinner, to remind you of a moment, scent, place or feeling. My paintings are made to be remembered. They lift your spirits. Art is visual but loved through stories. My paintings will start stories of your own.

Janette is best known for her expressive painting and joyful use of colour. Working from her studio overlooking Morecambe Bay, she is inspired by lush botanicals and the light-filled landscapes of the South Lakes.

Biography

Janette is best known for her expressive painting and joyful use of colour. Working from her studio overlooking Morecambe Bay, she is inspired by lush botanicals and the light-filled landscapes of the South Lakes.

“I love the process of making paintings. I embrace the visceral qualities of charcoal, ink, watercolour, acrylic and oil paint and welcome in the surprising and the unexpected. I seek out colour, texture, marks, line, drips, puddles, thin paint, thick paint, print, collage, shape and pattern."

Janette embraces change and variety and so does not restrict her explorations with any particular medium, though she often finds herself working with natural colour through her watercolour paints, inks and drawing materials. The use of natural pigments feels appropriate as many of them are found in the ores and minerals beneath her feet and in the landscape surrounding her studio. Janette regularly collaborates with Yorkshire based art material makers Wallace Seymour Fine Art Products, who specialise in making art products using traditional materials and methods.
